23RD ANNUAL NCTOA SWAT COMPETITION
Thursday, April 02nd, 2015
Salemburg, NC – Teams of operators from twelve law enforcement agencies across North Carolina converged at the North Carolina Justice Academy to showcase their skills at the NCTOA SWAT Competition.
The two and a half day event tested each teams’ shooting capabilities, conditioning, and ability to work as a team in nine events. For several teams, it was their first time at the competition. The days were long and wearing, but team members as well as their competitors encouraged one another and kept a positive attitude throughout each event.
David Shellenberger, Oak Grove’s VP of Law Enforcement & National Security said, “the competition is a great way for teams with different backgrounds to come together to see how everyone else has been training. It’s a learning opportunity to see what other teams do well and how they can strengthen their own”.
The teams even encountered nighttime events including an “Officer Down” event in which two teams raced side-by-side through the course. On the last night, Oak Grove hosted a cornhole tournament. Teams of two consisted of operators from different agencies to encourage the commingling of different groups. Congratulations to Shawn from Raleigh PD and Brett from NCSHP for winning the tournament!
Going into the final day, the competition was neck and neck, which made for an intense final event as the teams battled for first place bragging rights. The final standings came down to the traditional “Team Carry” event. Raleigh PD narrowly edged out Ft. Bragg SRT for the win. Cary Police Department took third overall.
NCTOA’s mission is to promote and encourage educational activities and/or research related to safe and proven tactics. It provides its members with resources and training consistent with the best practices of law enforcement tactical operations as well as an opportunity for officers to gather together to compare ideas and experiences, and continue to learn new skills and tactics in a safe environment.
Oak Grove shares the NCTOA philosophy and we actively participate in many NCTOA events. The SWAT Competition brings together novice and experienced SWAT teams from across NC to compete, train, and test their abilities in various physical and tactical events. It was also a great opportunity for vendors to show off their latest and greatest gear and swag. Overall, it was a fun-filled, successful event and proved very productive in promoting our training capabilities within the law enforcement community.
