Oak Grove Technologies designed, developed and delivered a practical game-based immersive simulation that supports instructor-led training. During the immersive 3D simulation, the player encounters scenarios that require the application of situation-specific decision-making.
Our key challenge was to create a highly engaging interactive 3D simulation training experience involving complex interactions in multiple settings using Caspian Learning’s Thinking Worlds authoring tool set.
Our approach to developing this game-based immersive simulation involved the analysis, design, and development phases of the instructional systems design process. As a blueprint for the development, we created a comprehensive Instructional Design Document (IDD) that included the following game design elements:
- Simulation terminal and enabling objectives
- Scenario descriptions
- Character descriptions
- Environment descriptions
- Task diagrams
- Game play flowchart
- Graphical user interface (GUI) design
To produce the game-based simulation, we developed more than 20 unique characters representing distinct roles in each of the scenarios. We also recreated four 3D environments representing different work areas that the learner could navigate through in the performance of the objectives in each scenario. The interface design used visual cues to help the learner figure out where to go and what to do next while progressing through the game. We incorporated a variety of media such as animations, images, and conversation simulations to provide accurate and engaging scenarios. For successful completion, the player needed to demonstrate the ability to find the right character or characters and determine the next course of action based on the requirements of the specific situation.
The scenarios were developed from extensive interviews with subject matter experts to determine the most commonly occurring events and appropriate responses to different environmental stimuli. Based on our findings, we structured incidents to encourage higher order critical thinking skills. By placing players in the position of problem solvers, they become actively involved in the immersive simulation.
