DAVID SHELLENBERGER TALKS LEADERSHIP AT NY TACTICAL LEADERSHIP FORUM

Thursday, March 05th, 2015

Saratoga Springs, NY – Veteran FBI Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) leader, David Shellenberger, discussed leadership from his personal and professional perspective at the 1st Annual Tactical Leadership Forum.

The Tactical Leadership Forum was two-day forum geared toward the skills effective leaders possess and how those skills translate into successful response operations.

David drew from his 30 years of tactical team leadership experience to educate the audience, comprised of over 100 local, state, and federal Tactical Team Leaders from across New York State, about the importance of tactical team leadership. His rousing discussion focused on team building, competence, and public perception.

David expanded upon his career experience and discussed the importance of effectively incorporating the leadership component within the individual team and broader tactical community.

He highlighted the importance of camaraderie saying, “The Team must know you care about them. When this is in place, the Team will push new limits.” He continued, “Good leaders give good guidance and help the Team manage training tempo and quality of life with their families – a tough challenge when you factor in mission creep/op tempo.”

He encouraged realistic training, leveraging lifelike scenarios in multiple diverse environments to “reduce the tendency to over anticipate and preemptively react in order to enhance mental, interpersonal, and physical adaptability,”

David went on to discuss how effective leadership skills can be utilized to influence a positive public perception of tactical teams. He noted the importance of maintaining a non-threatening presence amongst the community through “transparency and communication,” and added, “Good community relationships are much more likely to develop if officers work within cultures of fairness and respect.”

Finally, he said,” The greatest way to develop someone as a leader is through role modeling.” As a tactical leader, I must know my Team’s capabilities and true skill sets, requiring vigilance through a constant needs assessment. This must be done so you can assess and apply your Team’s skill sets appropriately. A good leader must realize his own weaknesses as well, and be honest with that assessment.”

In addition to David’s Leadership presentation, the agenda consisted of a Capability Assessment Overview of NCCAD, discussions involving Successful Integration of Tactical Medics, SWAT/K-9 Interoperability, NY State case studies, and networking opportunities.
